Right after reading this my husband came to me to read and translate an old typewritten, half-sheet of paper he found among the papers from his uncle in Austria. It was written in German by his uncle’s friend who had fled Czechoslovakia to Linz, Austria in 1945. The title was, “The Flight”, and described how on a dark and foggy night he and his brother, their wives and children took all their important things including all his machinery for making wheels and tires and packed 12 trucks. Money and contraband was also taken to bribe border guards and law enforcement. Once settled in Austria he used his know-how, supplies, tools, machinery and the use of radio-dispatched motorcyclists to help stranded motorists becoming a very valued service in Linz.
