Hi Patrick and tc my only concerns are willing the technology ever be safe enough to minimize accidents and the other problem is road rage if we can solve those issues I think it'd be common to see them in the decades to come
Road rage = human aggression towards other humans, version #3,645.
USA automobile magazine "Car And Driver" dedicated almost all of the November 2017 issue to this topic. The letters section of the February 2018 issue contained excellent reader insights and feedback (not available on-line, unfortunately.)
Worthwhile reading for anyone interested, nevertheless.
I drive a Saab covertable, and will never ever surrender the pleasure ! Ide rather push my Saab, than drive a holden ! ! 😀
I hope that as you're driving that Saab, you're holden the steering wheel.
Ha! I saw what you did there Patrick and like it. Steve's apparently not going to (be)Holden to anyone telling what or what not to drive.
Ultimately, I thought that we were going to need any roads. At least that is what Doc Brown told Marty in Back to the Future.
Doc was right, roads will become extinct, eventually. We'll have to find new ways to kill one another. The amounts of road traffic fatalities & serious injuries are . . . awful, just awful.
Ha ha, they huge the road sooo well Pat, i sometimes use my knees ! ! 😀😀
Oh this is more of my area lol
The coming availability of 5G is going to have a big impact on this technology. It will allow MIMO data transmission at much higher rates. And the signal will be locked to your device rather than simply broadcasting all the time. The frequency being used is much stronger and has longer wavelengths.
Trucks are being tested autonomously, in what is called 'Paratrooping'. It means several semi-trucks (to use the USA term) can be controlled by one driver in one semi truck. They will all drive along at the same speed and can be manually controlled by the semi truck with a human driver if needs be.
Also the rise of A.I. will assist greatly with our autonomous lifestyle. And I.O.T. will become ubiquitous in our lives.
Patrick, is our future personal transportation more in the way of personalized drone vehicles?
Semi truck comes from semi-trailer, wheels on the back only. The forward portion of the trailer must rest on the back of the tractor or, when separated, upon height adjustable struts called landing gear.
I've seen artcles on paratrooping; scares me to death.
What is MIMO data transmssion?
Your final question I put to The Commttee, who say "Yes, smaller helicopter and hovering vehicles will be developed and used. The pace, manner and number are well within human decision still, yet be assured they will come to be."
Well they are officially called H.G.V. over here for Heavy Goods Vehicle. But most people refer them as Lorry/Lorries. Nobody knows the etymology of that word. It just entered our vocabulary and stuck.
MIMO is Maximum Input Maximum Output. Basically Wifi today just broadcasts a signal to anything and everything. MIMO is bi-directional. This is quite a good video explaining 5G - https://youtu.be/qt1MLfRMh8Q but it's hard to find one that doesn't elicit Christian Biblical overtones of calling it the BEAST.
These are what people are calling Personal Flying Vehicles - https://cleantechnica.com/2017/03/24/flying-cars-overview/
I've never had a driving licence and cycle everywhere. I find much spirituality in the humble bicycle.
I would love to live someplace where bicycles sufficed, I used to race them!
I thought I read in one of the previous e-books that driverless cars were absolutely going to happen!
"Yes", says The Committee, "however the schedule, amount of driverless vehicles, designs, extent of use and deployment remain largely undecided as you read this."
Interesting.. Well, I HATE huge trucks.... They should be BANNED from the road. They cause lots of accidents
I think in Amsterdam there are more bikes than cars. That would be very fun :-)
Since I'm in a giggly type of mood today... I will share this video to make you all get the giggles. In my opinion there is nothing more joyous in life, than to get the giggles :-) Agree?
What do the Committee giggle about???
Banning huge trucks would be an economic disaster or life would nearly come to a halt, likely a combination of both. Everything consumed, including food, makes its way by truck.
Fuel costs alone would SKYROCKET if smaller vehcles were used. Heavy trucks consume about 300-400 ml of fuel per km, to transport twenty tons or so of goods and materials. Imagine how much more fuel would be needed for 10 or 20 smaller vehcles carrying only 1 or 2 tons each? Five times more AT LEAST, not to mention the cost of ten to twenty small trucks versus a single large one.
In the USA at least - and probably across the world - more than 9 of every 10 collisions between heavy trucks and cars are 100% the fault of the car. Most drivers, even good ones, are unaware of truck weights, taking dangerous risks near large vehicles, which can outweigh them 20-25 times. .
@Patrick.. Trains should transport all goods!
Yes accidents happen because trucks take up so much of the road and drivers get frustrated and take risks to pass. There should be truck lanes just for those huge trucks!
The cost of railroads and dedicated truck lanes would have the same economic effect as using 10x more fuel. A rail line cannot be run to every retail store or distribution warehouse and maintain quick, inexpensive and easy access that retail consumers almost take for granted.
Trucks and roads evolved away from rail transport for these reasons. Frustrated car drvers taking chances around trucks? There's nobody else to blame.
Mike mentioned the so called I.o.t but I wouldn't want to give up certain things like being able to get in my house anytime I want lol but if you are ok with the possibility of occasionally not being able to get in your house than go for it but also other thing is I don't want my stove or fridge to be smart just because I like to eat food
@Scott2 , Exactly, my smart fridge beeps to tell me ive left the door partially open, so i yell back " if your so fuckin smart, then close your own door" ! 😀
@Steve lol only thing worse than that is it suggests I eat more healthy because I need to lose weight LMAO bye bye smart fridge
Just saw this on FB... The cutest thing you'll see all week.
We currently have a tiny field mouse in our house which we've seen and tried to capture it in a friendly non killing trap but it's elusive at the moment roaming the house somewhere ;-)
Mermaids are the field mice of the oceans.
Hello, fellow weirdo members of the not a cult Cult. Anyone get a decent peak at the moon show the other night ?😀
I peeked at the peak, yes indeed (your spell checker zapped you Steve) and it was REALLY bright when the moon was overhead but I couldn't stay awake long enough (5 AM start in Texas) to see the blood part, I only caught the view of the blue & super parts. The rising sun messed up half the show, anyway but I saw the orange moon last time (2015) really well.
I enjoyed your article on self driving cars, but was perplexed by the comment "essence of the human soul, which is digital". Perhaps I am misinterpreting the use of the term digital. Can you clarify how are souls are digital?
We do not express ourselves - at the soul level - in what is deemed an analog manifestation. We express ourselves in a series of pulses and bits of electromagnetic energy.
The sun dial reflects the shadow of the sun as it moves, thus a watch or clock with hands is deemed analog. Same thing with a car's round speedometer and needle indicator.
Our soul does not exist in the physical environment. Our manifestations occur in a non-analog way; they do not follow the physical limits of our 3D environment and are therefore digital.
The speed and extent of the numbers we cannot yet detect or understand. That will come in time.
