Fascinating post!! (and it looks like I'm taking a "Pole" position in the lineup of this comment thread).
This subject brings to mind some questions I've always had and perhaps TC could to opine (or chime in).
I've always considered the rotation of earth with a comparison to a spinning top. Depending on weight distribution & balance, the tops spin at certain speeds (the rotations & balance) seems rather stable. As certain forces (like surface friction) slow the rotation, the spinning top becomes less and less stable, until it ultimately topples.
I've also thought of how we place small pieces of metal "correction weights" (with a certain mass), to smooth out the spin of automobile tires, to create a "Smoother ride" via "balancing" the tire.
My questions center around those concepts and how they might relate to Earth and the changes that are forthcoming.
Specifically, the melting ice around the poles and the resulting reconfiguration of water (& weight) throughout the planet, seems like it could be enough to impact the Earth's rotation (aka the weight distribution & balance of a spinning top or tire).
A continent at the BASE (Antarctica) and Greenland (at the top, with miles of packed ice), in particular seems like they could function as those "correction weighs" that we use to balance tires.
1) Are these good analogies to use in comparing the action of a planet like earth? and
2) Would the melting ice caps & resulting alteration of weight distribution be enough to play a significant role in the rotation of earth, timing of seasons and stability of the magnetic poles?
Says The Committee" Yes, to your question one, and not quite to number two.
Water will not affect the magnetosphere, frozen or liquid. Its polar location will have little discernible effect on rotation, although this will happen, but it will so small as to not change anything of any by itself. Other things will be happening to grab much more human attention than the tiny effects of surface water resdistribution. Weather and seasons will change, temporarily and in some cases permanently, but not because of melting ice."
Dear Patrick & C.
The question involved the magnetic poles alone :)
I know for sure that the physical poles Will not move in a human timescale other than a very tiny amount.
The concern was about all the dire scenarios put by the article (severe electrical failures, a deadly rain of particles from the space, and severe irradiation of dangerous wavelenghts by the sun, satellite electronic components popping burned like popcorn, and several other disasters).
But the committe just said that the effects of the magnetic poles inversion Will be of modest effect, so I consider my question indeed answered :D
Have a anice day
I would correct what written above: reading more correclty what referred by the Committee, the magnetic pole inversion will NOT happen anytime soon (concerning our lives or pf our descendants) but what will happen is thet we will see the magnetic poles wander around.
This has just been observed, as the south magnetic pole (located in the North for our conventions) has already wandered about 1100 kilometers as far as historical measurements has been done.
The prolem here is that Erik spoke (better said, the medium referred) that a magnetic pole inversion was due in the near future.
Ok, what really cares me is that we really don't have to dig a radiation shelter, we have only to count less on the compass and more on alternate methods to find the direction :D
"Magnetic pole inversion" says The Committee, "is not as serious as it might seem because it will happen very quickly and re-estabish itself. The change will be the direction of flux line flow but humans do not use the magnetosphere yet, and even when put to practical use, its reversed flow will not stop use of the magnetic field.
"The movement of magnetic pole positioning is always occurring, what will change will be the speed. The poles will move at more than one hundred kilometers per hour at some moments, and the fluctuations in Earth's magnetosphere will render satellite communication nearly impossible."
Just occurring me that currently there is a local minimum in the magnetic field located in the southern Atlantic.
The dimming of magnetic field here is not affecting the surface, but satellites that cross that zone have serious problems: communications stop or fail, even the Hubble space telescope stops observing, when crossing this spot.
No wonder that a overall diminished magnetic filed will have strong effects on satellites, but little or no effect near the ground
Is The Committee saying that in the past, the current Northern hemisphere and Southern hemisphere have switched places over the liquid core?
Like if you had a marble inside of a larger marble, and the outside larger marble could move freely in all directions?
I suppose that the poles can move, but there is a thing called angular momentum conservation law that prevents rotating objects to move easily their rotation axis.
This law is responsible of different movements of Earth rotation axis, most noticeabli the precession of the Equinoxes, and the nutation. There are several other second order movements of Earth rotation axis (more or less all movements sum up to a dozen) , but none of them involves an axis inversion.
"Correct" says The Committee, "and your scientist Newton stated this, objects in motion remain, objects at rest remain. Changing movement is no different than a chemical reaction called titration. When the tipping point is reached, the flip occurs easily. The forces which caused Earth to reverse its rotation about the axis were the approach and passing of another planet, too large to orbit Earth or have Earth become its satellite, because of the sun's magnetic and gravitational forces. It passed close, around and on by and in this process, it magnetically gasped Earth and caused the rotation upon the axis to reverse to what is now the current positioning or orientation."
The reason for Venus rotating over an axis practically oriented orizontally with respect to the orbit plane was also caused by the gravitational influence exerted by the same planet passing by? Or another? Or there is another explanation at all?
@Lorri: Yes x 2.
The Earth is a giant Cordial Cherry. ;)
so our space cousins hare able to perform not dsimple terraforming, but also change the configuration of a solar system... Moving a thing as massive as our moon is not a easy task, I can barely figure the amount of energy needed even to simply "nudge" our moon and push it out of the orbit... The moon mass is about 7.348 x 10^22kg
Love is Universal and apparently has the ability to impact more aspects of the Solar system than is contained within our Solar Plexes.
Reminds me of the various symphonic movements of orchestras (both terrestrial & extraterrestrial), who are orchestrating more vibrational ebb & flows than we allow ourselves to know.
Here's Dean Martin weighing in on the subject (in a previous era's version of a TEDx talk): I always thought he was from another planet anyway.
When a moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie
When the world seems to shine like you've had too much wine
Bells will ring ting-a-ling-a-ling, ting-a-ling-a-ling
And you'll sing "Vita bella"
Hearts will play tippy-tippy-tay, tippy-tippy-tay
Like a gay tarantella
When the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool
When you dance down the street with a cloud at your feet
You're in love
When you walk in a dream but you know you're not dreaming signore
Scuzza me, but you see, back in old Napoli
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite crooners. "Ain't That a Kick in the Head" is my number one favorite.
Says The Committee "Gravity does the work, it takes much less effort to re-direct gravity than oppose it."
@Tim..... a more, great post! Says so much 🙃👁🙇🏽♀️🙇🏻♂️🎇🎶🎵
I just love it when TC and Pierluigi converse, it makes me feel almost intelligent !!!😂😂
Hmmn interesting our Moon came from Jupiter. I was always of the belief that it came out from earth. Perhaps out of the Pacific area.
I saw this the other day which seems to allude to the fact our Solar system sits inside a magnetic bubble, created by the sun - https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2017/nasa-investigates-invisible-magnetic-bubbles-in-outer-solar-system
The Committee explained the creation of the moon before, in better detail.
Indeed the moon was formed along with Earth but was drawn into the orbit of Jupiter as the planets formed and spread out to their respective orbits.
It was brought back artificially and since the creation of man, i.e. within the last thousand centuries.
An interesting video put out by Dutchsine today Here’s the link and you can skip to the 2 or 3 minute mark. It’s about plasma electricity and his idea that the core of the earth is plasma.
